The Wait

When we started this adoption process, one year ago last week, our agency said it would take 9-12 months from start to finish. Now, things have slowed down to 20-24 months from start to finish. The latest news is that it is only going to get slower. The CCAA has said they have more parents wanting to adopt and not enough babies to go around. This seems highly unbelievable given the situation in China with the "one child" population laws. Most people seem to think that it's more a matter of not enough "paper ready" babies (meaning those who have everything needed in order to be adoptable). Given this new information, most agencies are telling their clients that the wait is going to go up to 24 months from log in date to referral. If this is the case, then we can expect our referral in August 2008 or beyond.

This is devestating news to most anyone who is in the same boat as us, but not that surprising either. China has also put into force strict guidelines for new applicants. They will no longer allow singles to adopt, there are higher limits on the amount of assets one must have, and the health requirements have also changed. I think a lot of people will drop out of the China wait and switch to other programs/countries (such as Vietnam). As far as I know, we are in this for the long haul and don't plan to switch.

On another note, as I was typing this, my two-year old daycare girl just came up to me and says "'re my best friend!" How cute is that?!?

Four months, 11 days down....19 months 20 days to go (or something like that....hopefully less though!!)
